Today is National Work from Home Day. Which is an excellent day to talk about what to wear when you work at home, and tell you about a post for fashion chain Next on wearing denim in the office that I recently contributed to.
The post is called How To Work Denim In Every Office and looks at four different scenarios. Dress down Friday in a corporate office, in the classroom, a start-up or media agency…and when you work from home. People working in each situation have provided their tips for the best cuts and colours of jeans to wear at work, and what to team with them. And it’s all summed up in a colourful infographic.
I was asked for lots of detail about how I wear denim in the office, and it was fun to think about what I wear and why, at different times of the year.
It’s a rare day when I don’t wear jeans, usually with one of my blue or black stripey tops, and a fluffy grey cardigan and sheepskin boots in winter. When it gets warmer I ditch the cardi and boots and get out my cropped jeans with turn-ups (and try to remember to apply the fake tan before exposing my ghostly white legs!)
I’ve refined my signature home working style over the years because I like not having to choose an outfit in the morning, and being able to forget it once it’s on. But I do have more variety in the summer, mixing in linen tops and cropped trousers when it’s warm enough.
I like having bare feet after all those months wrapped up, and relish the first nail polish application of spring. Brightly coloured toe nails are such a mood booster! I had a long addiction to Rouge Noir, but at the moment I’m alternating between shocking pink, which matches my Birkenstocks, and pillar box red.
I put on jewellery or a scarf for a Skype call or to go out, but I take it off as soon as I get back because it gets in the way when I’m typing.
The most important thing I’ve learnt about working from home is that there are no rules, and that applies as much to clothes as to working hours, breaks etc. I prefer not to wear pyjamas, tracksuit bottoms or slippers, but I know people who are devoted to them! When you work at home you have the freedom to do what’s best for you, and you alone.
People are sharing photos of their home offices on #NationalWorkFromHomeDay and #nwfhd. I’m home alone today so the best I can manage for now is this picture of my feet, but I’d love to see what you’re wearing today. How often do you wear denim in the office?
